Advertising special events and results

We have two aspects, one of us (the prime representative, officially) sends out notices to local newspapers and to local dance organizations (NFDI) and dance groups. Their partner sends out notices to EEFC and people in neighboring cities like Vancouver and Victoria. I send out notices to people I've danced with in both the local area and the neighboring areas (Portland). We overlap, deliberately, and repeat the notices several times as the date approaches. The "official" folks put flyers out at our regular weekly dances. The flyers are available online at our web site.

So having said all that, we still haven't got a reliable system, because we never know if the event will be a great success, or a great failure, or somewhere in-between. If we have a Macedonian star/band we usually have a success because a lot of people between Vancouver BC and Portland are Macedonian or really like Macedonian music and dances. Bulgarian is iffy, because the young Bulgarians located in this general area are not a dependable group, as far as showing up. These are the two most prevalent nationality groups that come through the area, or have local music, that we (our group) have hired in the past.
We've been a group for 45 years or so, and before the last 2 years, we rarely had special events, and then it was mostly live music from local bands, and only about 2 or 3 times a year. In the last 2 years, we have had more special events, featuring both, international stars/bands and local bands, than we had in the last 10 or 15 years.

So our question is, what is your success/failure status? What do you do to promote your special events, or, if you don't do special events, what do you do for your regular dance group attendance promotion? And please give us your expectations, you know, if you prefer a small/large group, is it working out like you've hoped? And how long have you been doing this.
