Each week after our session, since I live with the programmer, I look at the whiteboard with our program on it and send an email with the list (and perhaps some nmemotic commentary) to those who were there as well as regulars.

It doesn't take long, seems to contribute some cohesion, and is intended to help fix dances in the members' minds. We are very much an "oh that dance" sort of group which knows what to do when it hears the music. Names have meant little (and I can't assert that this technique is making wide headway) and where the dances are from has meant even less (Denis bequeathed us a repetoire that celebrated the Serbian/Croatian dances he loves, our new leader and I, her consort, gravitate to the south and east a bit more. Our group, bless them, has taken it all in stride. It's all--oh that one's fun.). But, as others have begun to take some programming responsibilities, there is some greater use of that great taxonomic device--the name.

Anyway, here's last night's list as an example:

We were a smallish group, but we tried belts on Stara Vlainja (and Ellen and Zeke demonstrated her ulterior motive--Sej Sej Bob) and Zeke taught the ice skating dance, Hora Pe Gheata).

So, here's the list:

Bar
Pravo--5:11 this time
Stara Vlainja--an old familiar ones, with belts this time
Dospatsko
Hora Aggadati--Hawaiians have the hula; this is what the Israelis came up with. Oy.

Bufcansko--rearranged the order so Gerry could dance it
Hora Pe Gheata--new Romanian dance thanks to Zeke
Dedo Mili Dedo--Dance--Trad Macedonian; Lyrics--Judy Murphy
Pjadushko--4-3-2-1 with arm movements as a reminder now
Dvashti Tristi

Opa Cupa--the endless quest
Harmonica--Israeli circle dance that Ellen favors
Laz Bar--Cathy's Armenian dance
Milanovo
Tsamiko--classic Greek dance

Hora de la Sorroco--Romanian windshield wipers
Kumanovsko
Ma Navu--at least it's not Mayim, sez Ellen
Preview--Sej Sej Bob
Lesnoto

broadcasting the dance list Empty Broadcasting lists to help people learn names

I like this idea, especially commenting on the dances as a memory-jogger. I'm curious to know, do the other members in fact read your lists and does it in fact help them remember the names of the dances? Maybe you haven't been doing it long enough to have an answer to this. Our group is a lot like yours in this way - people come up to me all the time (I do know the names of nearly all our dances) to ask, "What's that dance I like? You know, the one that goes round and round, in and out?" (In most cases I do know which dance they mean!)

broadcasting the dance list Empty Keeper of the Names

Hi, Sally, I'm the Keeper of the Names for a couple of the groups I'm in, too. Often I can figure out (or remember) which dance someone means from a similarly opaque description. Everyone has little hidden talents - mine is remembering which dances people like and who can lead them. Sounds like you have a similar one.

Hi, Kim, are you still sending out those dance lists? I haven't seen one in a while.
